What the service is

Downpipe work covers replacing cracked, split or missing pipes, renewing brackets and fixings, re-routing pipes that discharge in the wrong place, connecting properly into gullies and drainage, and clearing blockages in the vertical run and at the shoe.

Who it's for

Anyone with a wet patch on a wall next to a downpipe, a pipe that's come away from the wall, or a discharge that's soaking the ground next to the house instead of entering a drain.

When you need it

There's staining or moss down the wall behind or beside the pipe. The pipe is cracked, split at a joint, or hanging off its brackets. Water gushes out at a joint during heavy rain. The bottom of the pipe discharges onto a path or flowerbed. Or a gully is blocked and backing up against the wall.

Why it needs a roofer

Downpipes concentrate the entire roof's runoff into one point. When that point discharges against masonry or straight into the ground next to the wall, you get persistent local saturation: the single most common cause of a damp patch that no amount of internal treatment fixes. Getting the connection into drainage right is what makes the difference.

A failed downpipe is a hose pointed at your house. It runs every time it rains, and the damage is concentrated in one place.

How the damage escalates

Concentrated water against masonry causes penetrating damp on the inside of that wall, often mistaken for rising damp.
Saturated ground next to the wall keeps the base of the brickwork wet all winter.
Freeze-thaw on constantly wet brickwork spalls the faces and erodes pointing.
A split pipe soaks the wall behind it invisibly, so the damage is well advanced before anyone spots it.
Blocked or disconnected discharge sends roof water into the ground close to foundations rather than the drain.
Loose brackets let the pipe swing and knock in the wind, working the fixings out of the masonry.

Taping or sealing a split pipe rather than replacing the section.
Fixing brackets into eroded mortar joints so they pull out again within a year.
Leaving a downpipe discharging onto a path or into a flowerbed next to the wall.

Most single downpipe replacements are quick once access is arranged. Re-routing or drainage connection work takes longer and is quoted accordingly.

Can a downpipe cause damp inside the house?+

Regularly. A split pipe or a discharge against the wall keeps the masonry saturated, and the damp appears inside on that same wall, often misdiagnosed as rising damp.

How long do uPVC downpipes last?+

Many years when they're correctly clipped and not under stress. Most failures come from loose fixings and impact damage rather than the material.

Can you clear a blocked downpipe or gully?+
