Service overview

Fasciasexplained properly

What the service is

Fascias are the boards fixed to the rafter ends along the eaves. They carry the guttering and close off the end of the roof structure. Fascia work means removing failed boards, checking the rafter ends behind them, fitting new fascias with straight, clean lines and re-hanging the rainwater goods so they fall correctly to the outlet.

Who it's for

Homeowners with sagging guttering, visibly rotten or bowing boards, or peeling paint on timber fascias. Also anyone having guttering replaced, since new guttering on a rotten fascia has nothing solid to fix to.

When you need it

Guttering is pulling away or sagging between brackets. The board is soft, split, bowed or green. Paint is flaking off repeatedly. Birds or wasps are getting in behind the board. Or a previous installer has capped over rotten timber with plastic and it's now failing behind the cover.

Why it needs a roofer

The fascia is a structural fixing point, not just trim. If it's soft, the gutter brackets pull out, the gutter falls wrong, and water goes down the wall and back into the rafter ends. Capping over rot with uPVC hides it while it spreads, which is why we take boards off and look at what's behind them.

What ignoring it costs

Left alone, thisgets more expensive

Fascia rot is usually the visible end of a wetting problem that's already been running for a while, and the timber it protects is the roof structure itself.

How the damage escalates

  • Rot spreads from the fascia into the rafter ends, which is structural repair rather than joinery.
  • Gutter brackets fixed into soft timber pull out, dropping the gutter and soaking the wall below.
  • Water running behind the gutter saturates the wall head and the eaves, then finds its way into the roof space.
  • Gaps behind failed boards let birds, wasps and squirrels into the roof.
  • Capping over rot with uPVC seals moisture in, so the timber keeps deteriorating out of sight.

Mistakes that make it worse

  • Over-boarding rotten timber with plastic capping because it's cheaper and quicker.
  • Screwing new gutter brackets into soft wood and hoping.
  • Painting over soft timber to hide the damage before a sale.
  • Replacing the fascia and re-using guttering that never fell correctly in the first place.
  • Ignoring the reason the board rotted, usually a gutter that's been overflowing for years.

Our process

Five steps fromfirst call to sign-off

  1. 01

    Free assessment

Jamie checks the fascia line, the state of the boards, the gutter fixings and whether the rot has reached the rafter ends.

  2. 02

    Diagnosis and specification

You're told which sections need replacing, whether the underlying timber is affected, and what caused the failure so it doesn't repeat.

  3. 03

    Written quote

The scope is written down: metres of fascia, whether soffits and guttering are included, and any timber repair.

  4. 04

    Removal and replacement

Old boards removed so the rafter ends can be seen, new fascias fitted straight and level, and rainwater goods re-hung to the correct fall.

  5. 05

    Check, photos and clear-up

Gutter fall and discharge tested, old material removed and the site left tidy.

What you get

Specific outcomes,not vague promises

Structure protected

Sound boards and dry rafter ends stop an eaves problem becoming a roof-structure problem.

Guttering that actually holds

Brackets fixed into solid timber and set to the correct fall, so the gutter stops sagging and overflowing.

Clean, straight lines

A tidy eaves line changes how the whole front of a house reads from the street.

No hidden rot

Boards come off rather than being capped over, so nothing is sealed in to keep spreading.

Low maintenance

Modern boards don't need repainting every couple of years the way tired timber does.

The cause dealt with

We look at why the board rotted, not just at the board.

In detail

Materials, methodsand where they apply

Fascias, soffits and rainwater goods are one system at the eaves. Replacing one without checking the others is how people end up paying for scaffolding or access twice.

Materials we use

  • uPVC fascia boards in standard and capping thicknesses
  • Timber replacement where the property or a conservation requirement calls for it
  • Replacement rafter-end timber where rot has spread behind the board
  • Gutter brackets and fixings appropriate to the board and gutter profile
  • Eaves ventilation and comb filler where the roof space needs airflow
  • Matched trims and joints for a continuous line

How we do the work

  • Old boards removed so rafter ends can be inspected while exposed
  • Rotten timber cut back and replaced rather than covered
  • Boards set level and straight to a line, not fixed to the wave in the old work
  • Guttering re-hung with a consistent fall to the outlet
  • Eaves ventilation maintained so the roof space still breathes
  • Debris cleared from gutters and ground before leaving site

Variations of this service

Full fascia replacement

Old boards stripped and replaced along the run, with rafter ends checked and rainwater goods re-hung.

Fascia, soffit and guttering as one job

The most efficient way to do it, since access is shared and the three components work together at the eaves.

Section replacement

Where rot is localised, often at an outlet or under a leaking joint: the affected section is replaced and the cause addressed.

Fascia work as part of a re-roof

Eaves detailing renewed while scaffolding is already up for a full re-roof.

Situations this applies to

  • Guttering sagging or pulling away from the wall
  • Soft, split, bowed or green fascia boards
  • Paint flaking off timber fascias year after year
  • Birds or wasps getting in at the eaves
  • Plastic capping fitted over timber that's now failing behind it
  • Guttering replacement where the board can't take fixings

Residential and commercial

Mostly residential across Doncaster, Thorne and Yorkshire, terraces, semis, detached houses and bungalows, plus light commercial buildings where eaves detailing has failed.

Roofserve Ltd is fully insured, £2,000,000 public liability and £10,000,000 employers' liability. On larger jobs payment is staged, with the final payment taken only once you're satisfied. Cash and bank transfer only.

We work from Thorne, Doncaster across South Yorkshire, West Yorkshire, North Yorkshire, East Yorkshire. Local pages for Doncaster, Thorne, Rotherham, Barnsley and other towns set out where we cover.

How much does fascia replacement cost?+

It's priced by the metre run, whether soffits and guttering are included, the extent of any timber repair and access. You get a written quote after a free assessment.

How long does the work take?+

Most domestic fascia runs are completed quickly once access is in place. Timber repairs to rafter ends add time, and that's set out in the quote.

Can you just cap over the old boards?+

Where the timber is sound, capping is a legitimate option. Where it's rotten, capping seals the problem in, so we remove and replace instead.

How long do new fascias last?+

uPVC boards are a long-life, low-maintenance option that don't need repainting. Lifespan depends far more on whether the guttering above them is falling correctly.

Will you replace the guttering at the same time?+

It's usually the sensible thing to do, because the gutter has to come off anyway and the access is already there. It's quoted as part of the same job.

What if the rafter ends are rotten?+

They're cut back and replaced. It's identified at assessment where possible and confirmed once the boards are off.

Do you need scaffolding?+

Access is arranged to suit the property and the height, and any scaffolding required is included in the written quote.

Is the work insured?+

Yes, £2,000,000 public liability and £10,000,000 employers' liability.

Which areas do you cover?+

South, West, North and East Yorkshire, including Doncaster, Thorne, Rotherham, Barnsley, Sheffield, Wakefield, Leeds and Selby.
