What the service is

Ridge work covers the tiles that cap the apex and the hips of your roof. Traditionally they're bedded in mortar and pointed; over decades that mortar shrinks, cracks and lets go. We remove the failed bedding, re-bed and re-point the ridge properly, or install a mechanically fixed dry ridge system where that's the more durable answer.

Who it's for

Owners of pitched-roof properties across Doncaster, Thorne and Yorkshire, especially houses that haven't had ridge attention in twenty or thirty years, and exposed properties that take the wind side-on.

When you need it

You've found mortar fragments in the gutter or on the drive. A ridge tile sounds hollow or visibly rocks. There's a gap you can see along the ridge line from the ground. There's a damp patch in the loft near the apex. Or a storm has displaced a ridge tile entirely.

Why it needs a roofer

The ridge is the highest, most exposed line on the roof and the joint that takes the most wind pressure. When bedding fails, water gets under the caps and runs straight down into the roof space, and a loose ridge tile at the apex of a two-storey house is a genuine safety risk to anything below it. It's also cheap to put right compared with what it causes.

Ridge failure is gradual and then sudden. The mortar goes quietly for years; the tile leaves in one gust.

How the damage escalates

Water entering at the apex runs down the inside face of both roof slopes, so a single failed ridge can produce damp in two different rooms.
A ridge tile coming off a two-storey roof is a serious hazard to people, cars and neighbouring property.
Once one cap is loose, wind gets under the run and lifts the ones next to it.
Damp at the apex saturates loft insulation exactly where warm air collects, encouraging condensation and mould.
Failed ridge pointing continues to dump mortar into the guttering, which then blocks and overflows down the wall.

Mistakes that make it worse

Pointing over the top of failed mortar. It looks fixed and lasts a season, because the bedding underneath is still gone.
Replacing only the one tile that moved, without checking whether the rest of the run is hollow.
Using an over-strong sand and cement mix that cracks away from the tile rather than moving with it.
Ignoring hollow-sounding ridges because nothing has leaked yet: a leak is what happens next.
Assuming a dry ridge system is always better or always worse. It depends on the roof, and it should be specified per property.

Materials, methodsand where they apply

Ridge and hip detailing varies with the covering. Pantiled roofs, plain-tiled roofs and natural slate roofs all use different ridge profiles, and each fails in a slightly different way, which is why the method should be chosen after inspection rather than assumed.

Variations of this service

Ridge re-bedding and re-pointing

The traditional method: strip the old bedding, re-bed the caps and point the joints. Suitable for most sheltered and moderately exposed roofs.

Dry ridge installation

A mechanically fixed, mortar-free system with integral ventilation. Often the better long-term answer on exposed roofs and on properties where mortar has failed repeatedly.

Hip line re-forming

The same principles applied to hip tiles, including hip irons at the eaves, on hipped and half-hipped roofs.

Ridge work as part of a re-roof

On a full re-roof the ridge and hips are re-formed as standard, so ridge failure isn't left inside a brand-new roof.

How much does ridge work cost?+

How long does ridge re-bedding take?+

Most domestic ridge lines are completed quickly once access is in place. Jamie confirms the timescale with the quote.

Should I choose mortar or a dry ridge system?+

It depends on the roof, the profile and how exposed the property is. Dry-fix removes mortar failure from the equation and adds ventilation; re-bedding suits many traditional roofs. You'll get a recommendation based on your roof, not a default.

How long does re-bedded ridge last?+

Correctly stripped, re-bedded and pointed ridge work lasts many years. Pointing applied over failed bedding, which is what usually gets quoted cheap, does not.

Is one loose ridge tile urgent?+

Yes. It's both a water entry point and a falling hazard above whatever sits below it, and wind will work along the run from there.

Do you check the whole ridge or just the failed section?+

The whole run is inspected. Fixing one cap on a run that's hollow along its length just means calling someone out again.

Can you do ridge work in an emergency?+

Will ridge work stop my loft damp?+

If the water is entering at the apex, yes. If it isn't, we'll trace where it is actually coming in rather than charge you for ridge work that won't fix it.
